More Evidence Shows That Daily Aspirin Might Combat Cancer

TUESDAY, March 20 (HealthDay News) — Aspirin, a popular weapon in the war against heart attacks, may also play a role in cancer prevention and treatment, three new British studies suggest.

“We have now found that after taking aspirin for three or four years there starts to be a reduction in the number of people with the spread of cancers, so it seems as well as preventing the long-term development of cancers, there is good evidence now that it is preventing the spread of cancers,” said lead researcher Dr. Peter M. Rothwell, a professor of neurology at the University of Oxford and John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

“Because aspirin prevents the spread of cancers, it could potentially be used as a treatment,” he added.

But the research is not conclusive, and did not prove that aspirin combats cancer. So, people should not start popping aspirin in the hopes of thwarting cancer, experts said.

Previously, these investigators showed that a daily dose of aspirin taken over 10 years appeared to prevent some cancers, but the short-term benefits and the benefits for women weren’t clear.

Currently, a daily low-dose aspirin is recommended for people who have had a heart attack or stroke to prevent another. “It may well be that taking aspirin to prevent cancer becomes the main reason for taking it,” Rothwell said.

Aspirin may work against cancer by inhibiting platelets, which promote clotting and also help cancer cells spread, he said.

The papers were published March 21 in The Lancet and The Lancet Oncology.

In one study, Rothwell’s team analyzed data from 51 clinical trials comparing aspirin with no aspirin in preventing heart attacks.

Overall, daily low-dose aspirin reduced the risk of dying from cancer 15 percent. Taking aspirin five years or more reduced the risk 37 percent, and over three years, the risk reduction was about 25 percent for both men and women, the researchers noted.

In addition, aspirin was associated with a 12 percent reduction in deaths from non-cardiovascular causes, they found.

In another study, Rothwell’s team looked at the effect of aspirin on slowing the spread of cancer, or metastasis.

Their data came from five clinical trials that also looked at daily low-dose aspirin (75 milligrams or more) and heart attack and stroke prevention. The researchers zeroed in on patients who developed cancer.

Over more than six years of follow-up, low-dose aspirin reduced the risk of distant metastasis by 36 percent, compared with cancer patients receiving a placebo, they found.

Moreover, aspirin reduced the risk of metastasis in solid tumors, such as colon, lung and prostate cancer, by 46 percent and by 18 percent for cancers of the bladder and kidney.

It also reduced the risk of diagnosing a cancer that had already spread by 31 percent. For those who continued to take aspirin after a cancer diagnosis, the risk of metastasis was cut by 69 percent, the researchers calculated.

Aspirin also reduced the risk of dying from cancer by about half. These risk reductions remained after taking into account age and sex, the researchers said.

In a third study, Rothwell’s group looked at the effect of aspirin on metastases by analyzing observational studies rather than clinical trials.

These studies revealed a 38 percent reduction in colon cancer, which matched well with the risk reduction seen in clinical trials, they said. There were similar findings for esophageal, gastric, biliary and breast cancer, they added.

While the study is attention-getting, not everyone agrees with the overall conclusions.

Among them is Nancy R. Cook, an associate biostatistician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston and co-author of an accompanying journal editorial. She pointed out that these studies only dealt with trials where aspirin was given daily, whereas two large trials in which aspirin was given every other day found no connection with cancer prevention.

“Aspirin seems to work for people who have had cardiovascular disease. Perhaps in the long-term it will turn out to be protective for cancer, but we need to verify that and get more information,” Cook said.

And, aspirin is not benign, Cook said, pointing out risks for bleeding and other gastrointestinal problems.

People should not start taking aspirin hoping to preventing cancer, Cook said. “Most of the studies show that the effect doesn’t accrue until after 10 years,” she noted.

Eric Jacobs, strategic director of pharmacoepidemiology for the American Cancer Society, said that “this study provides important new evidence that long-term daily aspirin, even at low doses, may lower risk of developing cancer.”

However, any decision about treatment should be made on an individual basis in consultation with a doctor, he said.

“Because these results are new,” Jacobs added, “it will take time for the broader scientific community to evaluate the data in the context of existing knowledge and to consider whether the clinical guidelines should be changed.”

Iowa Veterans Home improvements found to be ?perfect? – Iowa …

The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown is among the largest state-owned facilities for veterans in the United States. A long-range renovation and building project was started three years ago with funding from the State of Iowa and the federal Veterans Administration.

A more home-like atmosphere is the overall goal. The quality of life for residents is improving thanks to additional private bedrooms and baths, more natural light, and better accommodation of the changing needs of Iowa veterans and their family members.

An extensive on-site review by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs of major new construction at the Iowa Veterans Home resulted in a ?perfect score.? That means veterans can start moving into the new residential buildings.

Building Glasgow’s rubbish church

It’s been called Grand Designs meets Scrapheap Challenge.

But for me it’s more like what could have happened if Stig of the Dump or Uncle Bulgaria had been ministers of the Kirk.

Colston Milton Parish Church is fund-raising, to put up a new building and community centre. Nothing too unusual about that, you may think. But it’s going to be built of recycled rubbish.

To be specific: four tonnes of beer cans; a dozen redundant shipping containers; 300 industrial pallets; and 500 used car tyres.

But they’re starting small.

?Start Quote

There’s something deeply right that in God’s economy nothing – from people, to time, to materials, to resources – is wasted?

End Quote The Rev Christopher Rowe

Work is starting on the first building that’ll go up on the site – an “energy awareness hub”.

It’ll be based in two containers – the sort of thing that’s used to ship goods around the word.

They’ve reached the end of their useful life, and were due to go for scrap. But they’re finding a new life – perhaps been born again? – hosting a small exhibition on how to reduce your carbon footprint.

The minister, the Reverend Christopher Rowe, sees a profound message in the reuse of rubbish.

“I love this idea that nothing is wasted,” he told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland programme.

“There’s something deeply right that in God’s economy nothing – from people, to time, to materials, to resources – is wasted.”

He says the “big idea” is to use stuff that would otherwise be considered rubbish, “that would otherwise be considered not just useless, but a problem to get rid of”.

“The car tyres (for example) can’t go into landfill, because they heat it up,” he said. “But that very quality can be used in a building to produce somewhere that keeps its heat quite well.”

Hannah Buss, the trainee architect who’s working on the design, says the buildings will begin to provide “some of the essential community space that is needed in Milton”.

“There’s nowhere at the moment,” she added.

I met her in the workshop – based at a disused youth club, next to the primary school – where she’s started work on the wooden panels that will transform, and insulate, the steel boxes that’ll house the display.

In line with the whole ethos of the scheme, those panels are being custom-made from old scaffolding boards, that have been thrown away.

The hope is that the first tangible signs that work is under way on the site will help to develop construction techniques that can be used on the main buildings. And generate more enthusiastic volunteers to work on the project.

“All the techniques that we’re hoping to work with will be techniques that anyone can get involved with,” Hannah explained.

“There will be some aspects of the building that we will need to get people in. But we’re hoping that the majority of it will be built by the hands of people in Milton.”

‘Heart of the community’

The site that’s been chosen is just down the hill from the enormous building that was home to the congregation, now sold-off for redevelopment into flats.

It’s an area of grass where there used to be tenements, which have now been demolished.

People exercise their dogs there. But there’s also very visible evidence that some people start fires, or leave rubbish there. And anecdotes suggest it’s where stolen cars get raced, or dumped.

Mr Rowe, though, is optimistic.

“This is as close as you can get to the heart of the community in Milton,” he said. “It’s where the buses terminate. There are shops.

“So the idea is to get something down on a piece of derelict land that, at the moment, is a bit of an eyesore. To get a good community asset there.”

After the energy hub, the church should be next. Then there are plans for a theatre, a cafe, a gallery, and offices for rent.

It’s hoped news that work is under way should encourage funding bodies to come forward with offers of cash to complete the project.

And it’s hoped that the rest of us will get the message – that recycling is something positively good, and not just something rather worthy.

Environment Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “It’s so easy and important to recycle what we can, be it recycling an additional item or recycling more of what you already do more frequently – and this project shows just what can be achieved.

“Latest figures show Scotland’s households already recycle nearly 44% of waste, but there’s still a lot more we could all be doing and I encourage everyone to go that bit further and recycle more recyclable items, more often, to make Scotland a true zero waste society.”

Thoughts from Thomas T. Thomas: Literature as Immortality

?Writing,? as a friend of mine wrote recently,1 ?is a beggarly business.?

The impression of most people among the unthinking public is that many writers can support themselves with their writing and often do so very handsomely. This may be true of some nonfiction writers who have acquired expertise in an area of general public interest (e.g., political affairs, diet and weight loss, home improvement, business success), are skilled at marketing, and supplement their book and article sales with speaking engagements, videos and podcasts, T-shirts and ball caps, and other collateral. But for the fiction writer, regardless of genre, the reality is less rosy. Except for a handful who are exceptionally talented and exceptionally lucky, are still good at marketing, and write novels that happen to tease the zeitgeist, most writers see only modest sales and never quit their day jobs.

So why do we do it? If it?s not the money, is it for recognition? But, in this business, there?s not much fame where there is no hope of fortune. Then what drives us to devote our free time, which most normal people spend with family, friends, and hobbies, to sitting hunched over a keyboard, reeling out lines of prose, agonizing over it, polishing it, and walking the gauntlet of rejection to see it published?

For some of us, it?s just an itch. Our brains?my brain, at least?are structured so that we live through tinkering with language. We have a thought and immediately put it into a formula of words, then pause, repeat it to ourselves, change a word here and there for better fit, repeat the whole thing again, fix another phrase ? continuing until it works with neat economy and subtle elegance. We walk through life hammering out epigrams, soliloquies, and declamations.2 We visit a new city or historic site and immediately think how to encapsulate and phrase it as background for a scene. We read an unusual name and savor it for a new character. And this is just when we have no book in hand.

When we do have a book on the front burner, it nags us like a spoiled child. The story wants to get out. The characters live as shadows to our everyday thoughts. Bits of action, bits of dialogue float up at the most inopportune times and demand to be written down. And after a day?s writing task, words come back to haunt us: the awkward word in a passage that needs to be fixed, the appropriate word that springs up to fix it. Writing a novel is like living a second, fantasy life in parallel with the mundane lives that everyone else leads. The itch.

But aside from this mental condition, which borders on a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder, why do we do it? We could tell ourselves that the book isn?t going to be marketable, that there?s no future in the effort it will require, and that with sufficient self-control we can go out and have a life. We can put soothing lotion on the itch instead of scratching it. ? So why don?t we?

Because, deep down, each one of us wants to be immortal. Even if the novel we?re working on isn?t likely to be marketable in this economy at this time, we have faith in its power to someday find readers. Deep down, we believe we?re really pretty good at this writing thing. It?s not exactly vanity, not the ?me, me, see me? that may afflict a popular singer or leading actor. It?s not our persons who will be celebrated long after we?re dead and buried, but the story that we?ve loved, worked to shape as something separate from us, breathed life into, and brought to the world.3

When the world that faces you every day seems cold and indifferent, when the rejection letters pile up, when friends and family start shaking their heads, we retreat into another fantasy: that we are a Cervantes or Shakespeare in hiding. Posterity will seek us out and celebrate us. Okay, it?s a dream. But it has a kernel of truth.

What, in this world, really lasts? A month after we?re dead, our medals and trophies may end up on EBay. A bronze plaque in our honor will be stolen for scrap value. Our names cut an inch deep on a granite slab will weather away in a few hundred years. Even the Pyramids are crumbling grain by grain.

Good works seldom outlast the memory of friends. Children grow up, go their own ways, and stop telling stories about mothers and fathers, let alone their grandparents. Memories of great-grandparents disappear entirely.

Even works of art eventually disappear. Statues are defaced and buried. Paint fades while canvas rots. Book paper disintegrates with time or burns at the whim of politics and religion.

Stories abide and live on?not in the printer?s impression or the pen strokes, but in the essence, the tale, the character in action, the fascination we all have with people who live only in our imaginations. The stories told by Homer, Sophocles, Virgil, Chaucer, Cervantes, Shakespeare?we remember them even though the original manuscripts have long since turned to dust. And now there is hope that digital bits, simply because they are so portable and copyable, will kick around on hard drives and bubble memories and storage systems yet undreamed for at least as long and perhaps longer.

The work of philosophers goes in and out of fashion, becoming a subject for academics to study more than for the average reader to enjoy. Who really expects to read Aristotle to understand natural history or Plato to understand ethics? We read them as background, as part of our cultural history. We read them to understand the evolution of our society. We read them because to be ignorant of them would be shameful. But we don?t?or most of us don?t?read them with the excitement of discovery, with delight at the intellectual secrets they reveal.

The work of earlier historians and scientists is not read as revelation so much as source material. Their observations and conclusions become picked over, compared, annotated, and adjusted by later scholars. History is a moving target, and every age creates its own image of the past according to the dictates of culture. Again, the average person might read Suetonius or Gibbon, Galileo or Pepys because they had first-hand knowledge and because to be ignorant of them would be shameful. But we moderns always check their reporting against other, perhaps conflicting, perhaps better situated sources.

Stories simply live on, and a young person can pick up and read Homer?s tales with as much enthusiasm as any reader of the last 2,700 years. The text may go through multiple translations, but unlike the surgical work of historical scholars, the work of translators is an act of love, trying to give the story new life in a faithful rendition in a new language. Think of Robert Fagles?s excellent translations of The Iliad and The Odyssey: Fagles stands back, and Homer speaks clearly in the best modern English.

Stories are the only things that last. And that?s why we writers spend so much time on them. Not because of the money, but because of the magic. The story may sit on a bookshelf in the living room unread for twenty, thirty, perhaps a hundred years. Then, one day, a child will wander in and pull the book down, open it, and fall in love. The story will be just as alive and vital as the day it was written.4

This ability to speak across time, to become a real time traveler, is part of the fascination. We know that our own books may be languishing as paperbacks slowly turning brown on the bottom shelf at the used bookstore, or dawdling along as the 2,304,558th most popular seller on Amazon.com. But they?re not dead yet. The magic might still happen.

That thought is probably silly. It?s probably just a sad fantasy. But it?s a stronger grasp on immortality than most people will get.

1. Kate Campbell, who blogs at Kate Campbell?s Word Garden, in an email during our editing of her debut novel Adrift in the Sound. Our email collection will soon be published as a Kindle Single titled ?Between the Sheets: An Intimate Exchange About Writing, Editing, and Publishing.?

2. Yes, you?re reading one right now.

3. And really, it?s the same for the best of the singers and actors. They want to fade into the background and let the song or the performance stand as a piece of art. But it?s easier for them to be dazzled by the bright lights.

4. That?s how I discovered much of the fiction of the 1930s and ?40s, by trying the books in my father?s den?almost always without first asking for a recommendation.

An adult person may not be able to handle life?s difficulties and land on more trouble if he doesn?t have the confidence to face these problems.

Self improvement does not happen over?night, as the term suggest, it is a continuous process of change and development until you have finally seek the right approach to life. Where to begin? Start by being confident about yourself and loving your imperfections. Go out and buy clothes that define your personality. Choose outfits that will complement your body rather than having to conform to the trends in fashion. Feel good about yourself the moment you wake up in the morning and constantly be reminded that your uniqueness makes you a stand out.

A lot of books from different authors have been written about this topic, some states medical facts, the others are suggesting while the rest are sharing their own struggles and success stories. Buy one in order to learn more and start the road towards a better and stronger you.

Why Oil Prices, Gold and Silver Are Looking Good Again

U.S. economyWith the recent strength in the euro currency, the spot prices of gold and silver have been stronger. Share price action in mining stocks has a very high correlation to underlying commodity prices and they?ve been moving up as well.

I still believe in the commodity price cycle and that exposure to precious metals and other commodities should be a component of an investment portfolio this decade. The fundamentals are there to support higher prices for gold and silver. We have inflation (which is underreported), strength in emerging markets, strength in the industrial economy, huge increases in the M2 money supply (in other countries as well), debasement of the U.S. dollar?the list goes on. Silver is probably the better trade now for new money.

If the U.S. economy were to show improvement over the coming quarters, then gold, silver and oil would all soar. While there remain major structural hurtles to gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the U.S. economy (mostly related to the housing market and sovereign debt), I think the economy is stronger than current consensus. We?ve got incredible low interest rate stability. Right or wrong, the Federal Reserve is doing everything it can to re-inflate prices and, given GDP strength in the fourth quarter of 2011, I would say monetary policy is actually helping.

Gold, silver, and mining companies boast very good outlooks this year and next. You always have company-specific investment risk in dealing with mining companies and it?s fair to view the entire sector as speculative. But, it?s a sector in which the right stock can produce major capital gains. There aren?t too many stock market sectors that offer this potential right now.

?I look at the stock market?s current trading action and I view it as quite healthy. Share prices and investor sentiment are vulnerable to the Greek situation, but this is getting to be old news now. With conviction, the market already expects a sovereign debt default at some point. This is why I?m a little surprised that gold and silver aren?t higher in price right now. The stock market?s performed very well since the beginning of the year and it should keep ticking higher.

I?m certain that institutional investors want to be big buyers of U.S. equities; they?re just waiting for a catalyst or a little more certainty. Stocks, gold, silver and oil prices should move commensurately over the next few quarters, opposite to the U.S. dollar. As I wrote previously, I?d like to see some improvement in the Dow Jones Transportation Average. With this confirmation, the stock market could easily move higher.
