OC- ? Oleoresin Capsicum) is only one of three basic chemicals that are used in self defense sprays. It is an irritant or an inflammatory agent. When you spray someone with this type of spray the person or animal will instantly close their eyes shut really hard and are unable to open them for some time. The OC dilates the capillaries of the eye and causes temporary blindness. It also causes the person to have uncontrollable, often doubles the person over to his knees. It is so bad that it causes instant inflammation of breathing tissues, restricting breathing. This is only a temporary condition but is very debilitating to the person or animal it is used on. OC has been shown to be superior to the other products and its popularity has grown in the last few years, because it comes in concentrations, formulas sizes, nozzle types and spray patterns. OC comes in concentrations of 1%, 5%, and 10%. there are a lot of differences in formulas so the percentages are not always a good indication of the effectiveness of the spray. Sometimes the 1% can be just as effective as the 5% or even the 10%, depending on the formulation factors and the heat rating of the OC, the carrier agent, and the spray density, these all combined determine how effective the spray will be. So there it is different companies may have totally different formulas so one may vary on strength from one to another. Either way Pepper spray is a terrific way to protect yourself from an assailant. Just make sure you compare labels and choose the one that makes you feel safer. Pepper Spray comes in so many shapes and forms, no one ever has to know you are carrying it. Most of the sprays will shoot from 15-20 feet the assailant dose not have to get very close to be effective.
