There is no doubt that a long distance relationship is an extremely challenging situation for those involved. My partner and I have had to deal with a long stretch of separation early on in our marriage. So I can personally attest to the stress distance places on any bond, however strong.

In our case, my husband was offered his dream job soon after our engagement and we were really excited about it?except for the fact that it was half-way around the country! I still had a year to go before I would get my own hard-earned degree and no way could I have moved without irreparable damage to my grades. Neither of us were prepared to postpone the marriage and go back to dejting or dating (as many of our friends and relatives suggested), so we went ahead with our wedding as planned.

I won?t pretend it was easy; it wasn?t, not by a long shot! Instead of coming home from a perfect honeymoon to our dream home, we barely managed a weekend together. The financial strain of maintaining two separate addresses meant I had to shift back to the dorm while he took a studio apartment close to his workplace. Coordinating our schedules so that we could spend time together was a logistic nightmare.

Our close friends circle wasn?t as supportive as we hoped for. Several of my closest friends were vocal in their skepticism of such long distance ?dejting? and I was often hard pressed to convince them of the sincerity of our commitment to each other. I remember getting furious when one (former) friend suggested dejtingsajt again on the sly.

Skype and texting became our lifelines and we made it a ground rule to have nightly phone calls that focused on us as a couple.
